Washington Stories
The Cleveland Park Listserv is looking for short fiction, up to 800 words. Starting in spring 2017 we will publish a flash fiction story a month. Our fiction project is called Washington Stories.
The Cleveland Park Listserv, America’s largest neighborhood email list, has over 16,000 subscribers. The listserv publishes several columns, and now we’re publishing fiction.
Submission guidelines for Washington Stories:
1. Stories must be by somebody who lives or works in the greater Washington, DC area, or be about the District of Columbia. The greater Washington, DC area is defined by the area encompassed by the Metro. Stories by writers who live or work in the DC area can be about any subject or theme. Stories by non-DC area residents must be about the District of Columbia or take place in DC.
2. Stories must be between 200 and 800 words.
3. Include a third person bio of up to 50 words in your cover letter. Your bio will published with your story.
4. Email us your story at washingtonstories@fmailbox.com as an attachment in Word or RTF formats.
5. Standard manuscript format, please.
Politics, crime, romance, literary, science fiction, speculative fiction, historical fiction, horror, urban fiction, thrillers -- almost all genres are fair game. But no children's literature, poetry, fan fiction or erotica. Please don't submit novel or short story excerpts; we want to see complete stories. What is flash fiction? Flash fiction are extremely short stories, usually 1,000 words or fewer. (For the Cleveland Park Listserv, they need to be under 800 words because of our online structure.) If you're new to writing flash fiction, you might find this article from The Guardian and this article from The Review Review helpful.
We accept previously published stories and simultaneous submissions. We’ll try to respond to you quickly.
Payment: $25 on publication. Payment is through PayPal or as an Amazon gift card (your choice.)
What we’re buying: Non-exclusive print and electronic rights to your story. You are granting us the non-exclusive right to publish your story on the Cleveland Park Listserv, and in a print and electronic book form. We may publish your story in a book of Washington Stories. By submitting your story to us, you warrant that it does not infringe on anyone's copyright or other rights.
Submit your stories for Washington Stories by email at washingtonstories@fmailbox.com.
